As Ah Ly will not be around this week, we celebrated her birthday last Friday with a grand meal. Although if you asked The Android, this was not a birthday celebration, but a deliberate excuse for everyone to have a grand meal.

With that, we had our grand meal at Pu Tien (莆田) Restaurant on June’s recommendation. This place has its fair share of rave reviews and specialises in authentic Heng Hwa (興化) food. The Android has three words: Fan. Fuckin’. Tastic.

As it was the first visit for everyone (with the exception of June), we ended up ordering easily over ten dishes! Not every single item was good, but enough of it was great to make The Android want to come back again.

Their pork belly with garlic sauce served as such an excellent appetizer, we ordered it again… twice. Their deep-fried eggplant coated with pork floss was so good, even Preston (who doesn’t eat veggies) loved it. Their garlic clams were topped with so much yummy minced garlic, it could kill a legion of vampires. You also have to try their crispy buns stuffed with fried pork strips, as well as their Heng Hwa version of the deep-fried prawn rolls. The highlight of the night, however, was their delicious stir-fried yam. Indeed, it’s plain and simple stir-fried yam… and The Android says you got to eat it to believe it.

And how can one forget to order Heng Hwa fried bee hoon and Heng Hwa lor mee when one is at a frickin’ Heng Hwa restaurant? The Android initially wanted an extra order of fried bee hoon, but at that point in time, the colour on everyone’s mugs were beginning to turn blue from over-eating. Oh! Try their deep-fried squirrel fish as well… not because it’s anything special, but because nearly everyone misread it on the menu as deep-fried squirrel.

Do take note that this is the Pu Tien at 127-129 Kitchener Road, so don’t end up stepping into a pirated version of the restaurant. Once again, call to make reservations or risk joining the queue at the bus-stop just outside the restaurant. Definitely a place to bring your mothers, folks.
